You have now examined the biblical evidence concerning the Holy Spirit. We have seen that the Spirit is not a mere influence, nor is He a "third person" standing between you and Jesus. The Holy Spirit is the very mind, life, and presence of the Father and the Son, dwelling directly within the believer. We have discovered that the Comforter is the glorified, Divine-Human Spirit of the risen Christ, poured out to fill all things.
Summary table
| Lesson | Question | Answer in brief |
|---|---|---|
| 30 | What does "spirit" mean? | A person's own life and mind; "Holy Spirit" is used of the Father's Spirit and the Son's. |
| 31 | Whose Spirit do we receive? | The Spirit of the Father, given through the Son; Christ in us brings the Father. |
| 32 | Is the Spirit a person? | Not a force. The personal actions are those of the Father and the Son acting by their own Spirit. |
| 33 | Why "not yet given"? | The giving of the Spirit is tied to the Son's glorification; it is His Divine-Human life poured out. |
The questions we answered
- Romans 8:16, “the Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit”: God’s Spirit and our spirit are distinct, as God and we are distinct. That does not make the Spirit a third Person within God. It means God's own presence witnesses with our spirit.
- John 16:13–14, “he shall not speak of himself”: Jesus said He was speaking in figures (John 16:25), and the Comforter’s coming is His own coming (John 14:18). The Spirit speaks what He hears from the Father and the Son because He is their very mind and presence.
- Matthew 12:32: Forgiveness for not recognizing the Son in His human weakness; none for rejecting the clear, present witness of God's Spirit.
A question to leave you with
If the Holy Spirit is the Father's Spirit given through the Son, what does "Christ in you" mean for daily life? Is it something we receive as a gift, or something we build in ourselves? That is the question of Module 8.
