Key verse

"And I looked, and, lo, a Lamb stood on the mount Sion, and with him an hundred forty and four thousand, having his Father's name written in their foreheads." (Revelation 14:1)

In this lesson you will
  1. Understand what a biblical seal actually is
  2. See the connection between the Seal of God and the Father's name
  3. Examine the Mark of the Beast as the counterfeit
  4. Discover why the Godhead issue is the foundation of the final crisis
  5. Face the ultimate choice: the traditions of men or the literal Son of God

Start with a question When the final crisis comes, what will be the defining mark of God's true people? Will it be a denominational badge? A theological degree? Or something written directly into their minds and hearts?

The Seal of the Living God The prophet Ezekiel saw a vision of the final judgment, just before the destruction of Jerusalem:

The passage in full

"And the LORD said unto him, Go through the city, through Jerusalem, and set a mark upon the foreheads of the men that sigh and that cry for all the abominations that be done in the midst thereof. And to the others he said in mine hearing, Go ye after him through the city, and smite: let not your eye spare, neither have ye pity: Slay utterly old and young, both maids, and little children, and women: but come not near any man upon whom is the mark; and begin at my sanctuary." (Ezekiel 9:4–6)

What is this mark that protects them from the destroying angels? Revelation 7:2 identifies it clearly: it is "the seal of the living God."

What is a seal? In the ancient world, a seal was the ancient equivalent of a notary stamp. To make a document legally binding, a seal had to contain three specific elements:

  1. The Name (e.g., King Cyrus)
  2. The Title (e.g., King of Persia)
  3. The Territory (e.g., Medo-Persia)

Look at the Fourth Commandment, the only commandment in the Decalogue that contains these three elements:

  • Name: "The LORD thy God"
  • Title: "Creator" ("the LORD made heaven and earth")
  • Territory: "heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is"

The Sabbath is the sign and the seal of God's creative power. But Revelation 14:1 reveals the ultimate, spiritual reality of this seal in the last days: the 144,000 have "his Father's name written in their foreheads."

The 144,000 are a group described in Revelation 7 and 14. The meaning of their number, the seal of God, and the Father's name written in their foreheads has been understood differently by Christians. In this study, we will examine the relevant passages to explain the interpretation being presented.

The Seal of God is not just a day on a calendar. It is the Father's name—His character, His identity, His literal Sonship—reproduced in the minds and hearts of His people. They know who they worship, and they reflect His character to the universe.

The Mark of the Beast: The Counterfeit Contrast this with the Mark of the Beast (Revelation 13:16–17). The beast power demands worship and seeks to change times and laws (Daniel 7:25). The mark is the counterfeit seal. It is the acceptance of human authority, human tradition, and a false system of worship in place of the literal Creator.

When the beast demands a mark in the forehead or the hand, it is demanding allegiance to a human system. It is saying, "You do not need the literal Father's name in your mind; you need to submit to our authority. You do not need the literal Son living inside you; you need to conform to our external rituals."

The Godhead is the Foundation of the Crisis Why is the identity of God the central issue of the final crisis? Because you cannot worship the true God if you do not know who He is.

If you worship a philosophical mystery, a triune committee, or a metaphorical son, you are not worshipping the God of the Bible. You are worshipping a god of human imagination. As we saw in The Antichrist Across Scripture, the spirit of antichrist is the spirit that denies the literal Father and the literal Son (1 John 2:22).

The final deception will be a counterfeit Christianity. It will be a system that uses the name of Jesus but denies His literal, begotten Sonship. It will replace His indwelling presence with a "third person" proxy, and it will substitute the Father's supreme authority with human tradition and ecclesiastical power.

The final crisis will force the world to choose between the Creator (the Father, through the literal Son) and the beast (human tradition).

The 144,000 Why will the 144,000 stand when the whole world is deceived? "And I heard the number of them which were sealed: and there were sealed an hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel." (Revelation 7:4) They are not a literal, genetic Israel. They are the spiritual Israel, the true believers of the last days. And they stand because they know who they worship. They have the Father's name in their foreheads. They know the literal Father, and they have the literal Son living in them by His Spirit. They cannot be moved, because their faith is not built on the traditions of men, but on the literal, living Word of God.

What we’ve established
  1. The Seal of the Living God is the Father's name—His character and identity—written in the foreheads (minds) of His people.
  2. A biblical seal contains a Name, a Title, and a Territory. The Fourth Commandment contains all three, identifying the Creator.
  3. The Mark of the Beast is the counterfeit seal: the acceptance of human authority and tradition over the literal Creator.
  4. The spirit of antichrist denies the literal Father and the literal Son. The final deception will be a counterfeit Christianity that replaces the true Godhead with human philosophy.
  5. The 144,000 will stand in the final crisis because they know who they worship and possess the Father's name in their character.
Reflect
Journal questions
  1. Do I truly have the Father's name written in my forehead, or am I just carrying the name of my denomination?
  2. How does understanding the Seal of God change the way I view the Sabbath? Is it just a rule, or is it the seal of my loyalty to the literal Creator?
  3. Am I prepared to stand alone for the truth when the whole world accepts the mark of human tradition?

If the Seal of God is the Father's name, what exactly is the Mark of the Beast, and how will it be enforced?
