The central question

Have you examined the sources behind what you believe?

Hearing a conclusion is one thing. Reading someone's summary of the evidence is another. Reading the evidence itself — the text, the dated publication, the transcript — is something else again. This project exists for the third.

  1. 01What did the original source actually say?
  2. 02How did the teaching develop over time?
  3. 03Which parts of the historical record support the familiar explanation?
  4. 04Are there documents or arguments that deserve closer examination?
  5. 05Does the conclusion withstand independent scrutiny?

The method

Examine before you conclude.

Step 1

Identify the claim or question.

Step 2

Locate the relevant biblical texts and historical sources.

Step 3

Compare the evidence with the explanation being presented.

Step 4

Evaluate the conclusion — and remain willing to correct an error.

Fair examination includes the evidence that challenges the investigator's own position. Read the full method
