You have now agreed on the rules of engagement. In Module 2, we established that we must let the text lead, test our inherited traditions, and apply the same standard to every view—including our own.

Now, we put the actual views on the table.

Before we can examine what the Bible says about God, we must define what the Christian world actually believes. It is a shocking reality that while almost all Christians claim to be "monotheistic" (believing in one God), they mean entirely different things by the word "one." A Trinitarian, a tritheist (someone who understands the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit as three separate Gods), and a Oneness believer (someone who understands the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit as different manifestations or expressions of the one God) can all stand in a room and say, “I believe in one God,”

while holding mutually exclusive, contradictory definitions of who that God is.

In this module, we will not attack straw men. We will define the three main teachings about the Godhead in the exact words of those who hold them. Then, we will ask the most basic, foundational question of all: What does the Bible actually mean when it says God is "one," and who does it identify as that one God?
